From GoodReads about the "Northwest Passage Mysteries" series

"The mystery weaves through the books & the romance is present but neither suffers. It's more daytime soap opera than overhyped blockbuster.

I'm on the third book & I'm at the annoying point where I'm nearly caught up & the author isn't writing fast enough."

Advance Reader Review

"A SEXY, grownup Hardy Boys lost in Twin Peaks territory."

Meet the Same Sex Marriage Era's ultimate bromance, Boy Scout police officer Lewis McQueen who goes by the telltale nickname "Queenie" and his polar opposite, Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Dale Clark, who is morally-challenged.

Of course, opposites will attract, because out and proud Dale and Queenie, who is "only a little bit out," are not only partners in crime...crime fighting, that is... but partners in life.

In the homophobic small town of Egypt, Oregon, a recently outed student is found buried in the freshly poured concrete of the local university's future library. Hate crime, crime of passion, or something totally unexpected? Queenie fraternizes with the prime suspects at his old fraternity looking for clues while Dale tries to avoid his lover's wistful ex-wife who blames him for stealing her perfect life, including Dale and Queenie's newborn son.

Praised by advance readers as "a sexy, grownup Hardy Boys lost in Twin Peaks territory" and "gives you a reading while camping feel, cozy, mysterious, and chock full of adventure and laughs."

Join Dale and Queenie as they unravel if "The Mystery of Love" is an even greater mystery than death in this first trip through the mysterious Northwest Passage.

Fraternizing with the Frenemy The Mystery of Love Northwest Passage Mysteries Book 1 edition by Gary Alan Hidalgo Literature Fiction eBooks

I first heard of Gary Alan Hidalgo on Twitter and bought this book to find out what were these Northwest mysteries all about. I loved every word. Hidalgo has a gift for writing and dry humor. The two hero, Dr. Dale Clark, medical examiner of Crow County, Oregon, and Officer Lewis "Queenie" McQueen, both classmates at college and frat brothers at Alpha Pi aka Ape, are hot on the trail of a murderer. The body is found encased in the cement of the soon-to-be built Tutweiler Library and it's soon discovered the victim is/was an Ape brother. This is a series and like all good serials this book ends with a great cliff hanger. I loved every word. Also, nota bene: this is not an LGBT 'themed' book as one reviewer has stated. This is a book with great characters who coincidentally are gay, just like real life. Hidalgo knows how to rock a mystery. He certainly can tell a good story, knows what pacing is, and left off at the perfect point that made me buy the next book. That Gary is so clever. I highly recommend this series if you're looking for a very well written and entertaining read.

Fraternizing with the Frenemy The Mystery of Love Northwest Passage Mysteries Book 1 edition by Gary Alan Hidalgo Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A small town, quiet, rarely a murder. A concreted body, a couple with a convoluted past and a couple with a secret. Murder! Powerful families and their expectations. Love and loss! It's a great read. Fast paced and fun.
The story moved quickly. The author is able to convey complete visual images to the reader with a frugal use of words. The main characters are described well enough, that you want to know more about them in future stories. This was a very quick read. I wished it had been longer.
I came upon this book by accident and I am glad I did! The author, Gary Alan Hidalgo, has spun a great mystery perfect for your summer leisure, Meet Queenine, the hunky police man and his life partner Dr Dale Clark, the ME for the local police department. In this first part we have frat boys, murder, closet cases, and socialites. Mix in a dead body and a unknown gunshot and your ready to take the ride.

I am going to reccomend this to my Book Club!

I can't wait for Part 2!!
I liked this book and I think the author did a good job for his first time out there. I had to restart the book twice because the story was a bit meshed together. There was so much that the author wished to share, I just wished there was more breathing moments, allowing the reader to determine which character was up to bat so to speak. The humor kept me interested in the story and I am anxious to read what happens next in this mystery...
I must say, Northwest Passages took me a bit off guard at first, but what an enjoyable, fun read. It's nice to change gears every once in a while and read something fun, but that holds your interest. It's a good, old fashioned mystery brought up to 21st century levels. The characters are fun and well thought out and the two 'leading men' are highly engaging... but what's the real mystery behind Detective Bates? I have a feeling there's more to this character than meets the eye. Oh yes, the final cliffhanger is fabulous! Right out of an old time detective serial.
I like the characters Dale and Queenie. They show their weaknesses and strengths, helping them to be very believable characters. Queenie's turn around seemed to be quick, first he wanted to keep being gay a secret but then told everyone he met. Dr. Dale was supportive, pushing his partner to stick up for himself against any homophobic people he meets. The story is a good mystery and I like that the pace moves at a good rate, but didn't care for the end. I don't want to be forced to buy the next book to find out what happens; this is what cost it the fifth star. Otherwise, this was a great read.
I discovered both Gary Alan Hidalgo and his writing via Twitter. On a whim, I downloaded Fraternizing with the Frenemy and I was immediately hooked. Having read more than a lot of LGBT-themed books, I must say that this ranks very high on the list. In fact, I do not want to limit this by saying it's LGBT-themed. This is a mystery that just happens to have two gay characters Dale and Queenie. I would like to think of these two men, as a modern day version of Sherlock and Holmes. Right away we are thrown face-first into the mystery and with passing page I found myself wanting more and more. Publishing this tale as a serial novel was not only sheer genius but harkens back to the times of Henry James and Harriet Beecher Stowe where serials were quite the norm. Overall, I highly recommend this story to anyone looking to get into a juicy mystery with an amazing backdrop and compelling characters. You will not be disappointed.
